First off, Hemp is natural plant that happens to be part of the cannabis family. So then is hemp marijuana? No, while being cannabis there are some major differences. Apart from differences in appearance, the major difference is what compounds are inside the plant. Marijuana is a psychoactive plant that is high in THC whereas Hemp is high in cannabidiol (CBD) and has no psychoactive effect on the body. Now that you know the major difference lets learn about hemp extract.
Hemp extract is basically essential the oils of the hemp plant. However there is a major difference between the makeup of a simple cold-pressed hemp oil and a hemp extract that has been distilled through the supercritical CO2 method. Hemp oil (cold-pressed type) can have benefits such as Omega fats and other things like that, but the true medicinal benefits come from a hemp extract that is distilled through the clean and pure practice of the supercritical CO2 method. Supercritical CO2 is a form of extraction that is used for many extracts. It occurs whenUSP Grade Liquid CO2 is heated with increased pressure, which gives it the properties of a liquid and a gas, helping it go through the hemp as well as extract the product from it. We prefer it because it is the only solvent free method of extraction currently.
Extracting the product with solvent free methods leads a cleaner and more pure extract. The biggest benefit to this method is being able to extract the cannabidiol compound or CBD, which is basically all the medicinal properties of medical marijuana without the side effects of getting high. Be very cautious of an hemp extract that does not specifically state that it contains cannabidiol or CBD.
CBD is a compound that is one of many found in the cannabis plant and has been studied and shown to provide multiple benefits to many common issues that people struggle with. CBD is the major nonpsychoactive compound that is present in the Cannabis Sativa. What does that mean, it means that CBD does not effect your mental state or alter your state of mind in any way.
A study publishes in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology has shown medicinal benefits in the following conditions; anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, antiemetic, anxiolytic and antipsychotic agent, and is therefore a potential medicine for the treatment of neuroinflammation, pain relief, arthritis, epilepsy, stress, vomiting and nausea, anxiety and schizophrenia.
Why have I never heard of CBD?
Well that’s pretty simple, prior to 2014 it was illegal to grow industrial hemp in the U.S. However, since the passing of the farm bill we are now allowed to grow industrial hemp and benefit from its amazing healing properties. Industrial hemp is a certain type of hemp that is shown to have less than .3% levels of THC. This is in comparison to “medical marijuana” that you find in dispensaries today with levels as high as 20-30% THC. Due to the extremely low level of THC it is impossible to get high off of Industrial Hemp. However industrial hemp is high in the CBD compound which brings with it all the medical benefits. It is basically an anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, muscle relaxing, sleep aid that has been shown to help with mental illness, arthritis, and different types of cancer all while being completely natural with very minor to no negative side effects.
Is all industrial hemp the same?
No, it is very important to know the source of the hemp that is used in any product containing it. Hemp has natural soil detoxing properties, meaning that hemp will absorb the toxin that are found in the soil where it is being grown. This is extremely important, the majority of hemp available today is imported from Asia and grown in area with high levels of metallic toxins presence in the soil. Obviously you want to make sure that any hemp product you consume comes from the US and is extracted in a clean and pure fashion.
CBD almost sounds too good to be true and more tests and trials need to be completed; however, the initial results are fantastic and we have no reason to believe that any future tests/trials will show different results. I believe in CBD and I also believe that big pharma will not be a fan and thus do everything they can to slow CBD’s integration into mainstream medicine.
Again just make sure the extract you are looking for comes from industrial hemp grown in the U.S., and that it is extracted using the supercritical CO2 method and is solvent free. Also make sure it contains CBD otherwise you will not be receiving all the benefits we’ve discussed in this article.
